RECREATIONAL PROGRAMS

Special Olympics

Any individual with an intellectual disability and at least 8 years of age is offered the opportunity to participate in programs offered by Special Olympics Indiana through our agency.  All of the athletes that participate in the Special Olympics programs must submit physical forms, applications for participation, and a signed Code of Conduct prior to participation in any sport.

Each sport program includes a required eight week training/practice session.  Athletes receive quality training and instruction from volunteers who have been trained and certified through a mandatory certification program required by Special Olympics International which includes: passing national criminal background checks; receiving training through a certified volunteer orientation program; and receiving training specifically for each sport.

Sports programs offered are: Spring and Fall Bowling; Athletics; Aquatics; Basketball; Bocce (for athletes 30 years of age & older); Softball; and Unified Volleyball.

Bowling Leagues

Bowling is held on Thursday and Friday evenings in the fall and spring at the Terre Haute Bowling Center and on Sunday afternoons at Patrick's in Sullivan.  In the fall, bowlers work on their skills to gain ribbons and medals during competition in the Indiana Special Olympics.  During the spring session, bowlers strive for trophies awarded at our Annual Awards banquet in the summer.  We utilize ramps, handle balls, etc. for those in need of extra assistance.  Anyone regardless of his or her degree of disability can bowl.  We have the distinction of having the only bowling league solely designed for individuals with special needs.  The Terre Haute league is the single largest organized bowling league in the Wabash Valley, averaging nearly 130 bowlers each season.

Summer Day Camp

The program is designed to keep at risk, school aged children with special needs active during their summer vacation.  The program focuses on physical activities, daily living skill development, and follow-along support to encourage the continued development of educational needs.

The sooner Anita and the rest of the gang know you want to be at camp next summer, the better they can make plans for it.  If you are interested in your child attending all or a portion of this program, please contact Anita at Happiness Bag during regular business hours and request a Camp Application packet.  You will be asked to provide the day(s) and time(s) that you anticipate your child will be attending in order for us to insure that we have adequate staffing.  No camper will be admitted into the program without a completed application packet.
